About the College

Davangere was once known as the Manchester of Karnataka for its economic activities, but now it has evolved as Shantiniketan-a place of learning. Government First Grade College and P.G. centre, Davangere were established in 1992 and affiliated to Davangere University (http://www.davangereuniversity.org/About%20us.html). A tiny college has grown into an institution of high quality. It is regarded as one of the better institutions in our state. It has nearly 3000 students. It has three faculties at U.G. level-Arts, Science and Commerce, and it is a centre for higher education with four post graduate courses including M.A. in English. It has many committed teachers in all the departments and has been accredited with B+ Grade by NAAC. The IQAC and other academic committees are active. In order to facilitate all round development of  students discussions, seminars, workshops, cultural and extra-curricular activities are organized. The G.F.G.C & P.G. Centre has evolved as a hub of learning.

About the Department

The Department of English is one of the pillars of our institution, teaching English language and literature to the students of various faculties-Arts, Science and Commerce. It has been successful in its commitment to value based and qualitative education in the field of English language and literature. The department has hard working, committed and motivated teachers. The post graduate department of English initially started with a few students has grown into a place of higher excellence of P.G studies guided by enthusiastic faculty. The English literary club of the department is active throughout the academic year conducting various programmes such as stress management, contact programme, grammar workshop, spoken and communicative skill development programmes and seminars on various literary aspects. To our credit we have bagged three ranks of Kuvempu University for the year 2009-10. It is reward for the teachers and a source of inspiration for students.

Context

Teaching of any subject includes analysis of the nature of the subject itself and the application of teaching and learning principles drawn from research and theory and applying these core learning and teaching principles  with classroom practices that are derived from them. The same is true with language teaching.  Approaches and methods practiced throughout the twentieth century have been replaced by innovative ideas and theories. The seminar is an attempt to develop new methods for application in the classroom for teaching of the English language. Globalization has had a tremendous effect on political, social, cultural and psychological spheres leading to enormous changes in the ecology of teaching and learning English language. Therefore language teaching faces the challenge of rethinking and upgradation of the teaching skills and reformulating the relationship between the teacher and the learner. A cautious approach is necessary to fill the gap between the generalizations. Language teaching and the ground realities because language teaching involves a complex, multi faced interaction between the teacher and the students.
The seminar will try to explore these ideas to provide fruitful out puts for those engaged in language teaching and evolve classrooms dynamics for the participants. It is hoped that the programme will turn out to be a teacher education programme.

Objectives

1. To enhance knowledge and proficiency in English

            2. Provide opportunity for participants to obtain a comprehensive

            teaching.

           5. To know, try and adopt a variety of teaching methods suiting
 one’s own teaching environment.

          7. An opportunity to language learners to upgrade English
 language learning capabilities.
